Finding a Black Psychologist in Ontario

Mock Session

Finding a Black psychologist in Ontario can be difficult. Many people search online for terms like Black psychologist Ontario, Black psychologist Toronto, Black psychologist in the GTA, or Black psychologist near me, only to find that the results do not always match what they are actually looking for.

For many Black individuals and families, finding a psychologist who understands culture, identity, racism, intergenerational stress, and the realities of navigating predominantly white systems can feel important. Mental health care is personal, and it can be meaningful to work with someone who brings both clinical training and cultural understanding to the therapeutic or assessment process.

At Embrace Well Psychological Services, we provide culturally responsive psychological services for children, adolescents, and adults across Ontario. Our practice offers therapy, psychological assessments, and psychoeducational assessments, with a commitment to supporting Black, racialized, and BIPOC communities.

Why It Can Be Hard to Find a Black Psychologist in Ontario

Many people are surprised by how difficult it is to find a Black psychologist in Toronto, the GTA, or Ontario more broadly. While there are many people seeking culturally responsive mental health services, there are still relatively few Black psychologists practicing in Ontario.

This can make the search feel discouraging. Some people may search for a Black psychologist in Ontario and mostly find listings for Black therapists, Black psychotherapists, or general mental health clinics. These professionals can offer valuable support, but they may not provide the same services as a psychologist, particularly when someone is looking for a formal psychological assessment, diagnosis, or psychoeducational testing.

Black Psychologist vs. Black Therapist: What Is the Difference?

The words therapist, psychotherapist, and psychologist are often used interchangeably, but they do not always mean the same thing.

A therapist is a broad term. It may refer to a psychologist, registered psychotherapist, social worker, counsellor, or another regulated mental health professional. Many therapists provide talk therapy and support for concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, relationships, and life transitions.

A psychologist is a regulated mental health professional who can provide psychotherapy, psychological assessment, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations within their area of competence. Psychologists may assess concerns such as ADHD, learning disabilities, anxiety, depression, trauma, autism-related concerns, intellectual functioning, and other mental health or developmental concerns.

This distinction matters because some people are not only looking for therapy. They may also need a psychological assessment in Ontario, a psychoeducational assessment, an ADHD assessment, a learning disability assessment, or diagnostic clarification to better understand themselves or their child.

When You Might Need A Psychologist

You may be looking for a psychologist if you want:

  • Therapy with a culturally responsive mental health professional

  • A psychological assessment for anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, or other concerns

  • A psychoeducational assessment for a child, teen, university student, or adult

  • Support understanding learning, attention, emotional, or behavioural challenges

  • Recommendations for school, work, or treatment planning

  • A clinician who understands the importance of cultural context in mental health

For Black clients, culturally responsive care can be especially important. Experiences such as racism, workplace discrimination, school-related bias, cultural misunderstanding, and pressure to “push through” distress can all affect mental health. A culturally sensitive psychologist considers these factors rather than viewing concerns in isolation.

Embrace Well Psychological Services

Embrace Well Psychological Services is a psychological practice serving children, adolescents, and adults in Ontario. We provide therapy and assessment services with a focus on culturally responsive, compassionate, and evidence-informed care.

Our founder, Fiana Andrews, Ed.S., C. Psych., is a registered School and Clinical Black Psychologist who is based in Durham Region but offers services.

She has extensive experience working in education and private practice settings, providing psychoeducational and psychological assessments, as well as therapy for children, adolescents, and adults.

At Embrace Well, we understand that seeking support can feel vulnerable. We also understand that many Black clients and families want to work with someone who will not minimize their lived experiences or require them to over-explain the impact of culture, race, family expectations, school systems, workplace stress, or community experiences.

Our goal is to provide a space where clients feel seen, understood, and supported.
